The Relationship between 5-Year-Old Children’s Weight Percentiles and Their Family Dietary Habits

Read More Background: Childhood Nutrition plays an important role in people's health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between family nutritional status and the body mass index (BMI) of children. Methods: This observational cross-sectional-analytical study considered documents of 2697 kids with five years of age who were under the auspices of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran in 2019. Their related documents as well as their nutritional status were registered in the Iranian integrated health information system. Household demographic information including family nutritional information like fruit consumption, vegetable consumption, and daily dairy consumption, fast food consumption per week and type of oil consumed were questioned. Based on the weight percentile, they were categorized in four groups underweight, normal, obesity and overweight. Results: There were significant differences between the frequencies of the participants’ consuming low or high daily amounts (under 2 and more than 2 shares) of the nutritional components (fruit, veg, dairy, and fast food) in each weight category (P <0.001). The frequencies of the consumers of liquid oil, in different weight categories, were also significantly different with the frequencies of those who used a combination of solid and liquid oils (P <0.001). However, there was not a significant relationship between the different consumed nutritional components and the BMI (P>0.05). Moreover, the children’s BMI was not significantly correlated with education, smoking and age of mothers. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that the daily consumption of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, different types of oils consumed and food consumption per week significantly correlated with weight categories of the five-year-old children under study. Therefore, in order to have a healthier population, it is critical to evaluate the nutritional condition of children during this period.

Read More Background Due to significant increases in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents in developed countries, much attention has been focused on this issue. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of nutritional education based on Health Belief Model (HBM) on self-esteem and body mass index (BMI) of overweight and at risk of overweight adolescent girls. Materials and Methods: The study subjects consist of 140 female students recruited from two high schools, who were randomly allocated to the intervention (n=70) and control (n=70) groups. The data collection instrument included sections on socio-demographic status, transportation method, physical status, and knowledge and attitudes of the students towards nutrition, which was designed according to HBM. As the intervention, model-based educational program was implemented through six 60-minute sessions, focusing on the overweight and at-risk students. Results were compared in the beginning, and three months after the intervention to find the possible impacts. Results: Average score of model structures and self-esteem of students in both groups had no significant difference at baseline, but immediately after the intervention and 3 months after treatment, the mean component scores were significantly higher in intervention group than controls (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the control group between the mean scores of model structures and self-esteem at different times. There was a significant difference at different times in component scores in the experimental group (P<0.05). The mean score of BMI in the control group had no significant difference in different time. Significant difference in BMI scores was seen at different times in experimental group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The positive effect of this program was seen among the participants. Therefore such interventions in schools for developing effective long-term healthy behaviors have preventive and controlling effects on overweight.

Given that having information in this regard is of special importance as a basis for future planning for adolescents, the present research aimed to compare body image in female and male adolescents and study its relationship with body mass index in high school students of Ahwaz, Khuzestan Province in the academic year 2015-2016.Materials and MethodsIn this descriptive-analytic study, 200 high school students were selected as the sample using the random cluster sampling method. The required data were collected using demographic questionnaire, anthropometric data checklist (height and weight), and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ). All descriptive and inferential statistics tests were performed using SPSS-17 at a confidence level of 95%.Results: The students ranged from 15 to 18 years old. Equal distribution was employed among all four grades of high school. Body mass index (BMI) in male students showed a significant inverse relationship only with appearance orientation (P<0.05, r = -0.238) and body image (P<0.05, r = -0.200). In female high school students, BMI was scientifically related to appearance evaluation (P<0.05, r = -0.354), appearance orientation (P<0.05, r = -0.219), body areas satisfaction (P<0.05, r = -0.257), and body image (P<0.05, r = -0.286). Body Image was significantly greater in female than the male students by controlling BMI.Conclusion: Overweight and obesity are considered important factors affecting the physical and mental health, including satisfaction with body image, among adolescent girls. Women’s extreme attention to their body leaves a negative impact on their attitude toward their body and body value. Therefore, promotion of a healthy body image should be integrated across all interventions aimed to address obesity and other health-related concerns among adolescents.
